Today’s R&R-4/29/08
It’s a good day for some random thoughts and rhetorical questions…
Jim Delany is Public Enemy #1. He is the Big Ten Commissioner, and the man who is most responsible for holding up progress in college football. Use today’s news as an example: Today, Delany told the media that the BCS is working out fine for college football, fine enough that the system doesn’t need changing. He also said that he will not allow a plus-one system to be created because it resembles a playoff. And yes, he does have the power to prevent that from happening.
Now, I’m not for a playoff for college football, either. But to say that the BCS is working? There are no words for something so ridiculous. I would like to thank Jim Delany, however, for giving me the opportunity to tease a new page coming to this site. It’s going to be called Fixing College Football and it will feature a multiple-part series detailing a system I created that would work for NCAA football. Look for it, coming soon…
I am a fan of open-wheel racing; I have specifically enjoyed the IndyCar racing series. For those of you who aren’t familiar with racing, there used to be two open-wheel racing leagues: IRL and Champ Car. Before this season, they merged to form the IndyCar Racing series. In case you still don’t know what that is, this is the league that has the Indianapolis 500.
Anyway, I’m encouraging all of you to “gear up” for the Indianapolis 500 in May. Here’s why: During Sunday’s race in Kansas, ESPN conducted an interview with Danica Patrick. During that interview, she was asked about the problems her car was having. Instead of answering, she expressed a lot of frustration at the ChampCar drivers who have come into the IndyCar series, essentially stating that they are reckless drivers causing little more than problems for everyone else. This kind of honest talk is fun for a fan, and it means that you must check out the Indianapolis 500, IndyCar’s next race, to see if anything comes of this.
Take a break from playoffs tonight to watch E:60 on ESPN. E:60 is quickly becoming my favorite sports-related show. It’s like the 60 Minutes of sports, only better than 60 Minutes. The second season of the show began two weeks ago, which was highlighted by a fantastic profile of Steve Williams, Tiger Woods’ caddy. Then, last week, they exposed Miguel Tejada, you might remember, for lying about his age, or, at least, revealing his true age to the public.
E:60 is always entertaining. Hopefully, Bill Simmons, one of my sportswriting heroes, will be on the show as well.
Who knew that the Hawks had it in them? They lost the first two games of their series with Boston, only to win the next two at home. This makes their Game 5 a must-see.
The Magic and the Lakers are already in the second round. I hope I’m wrong but I think the Spurs will join them tonight.
Thanks for reading, and don’t forget to click the ads to the right. They keep this site going. Enjoy the sports evening, everybody!
